February 12, 1944 Interlaken to Dedicate New Roll of Honor

The formal dedication of the Service Honor Roll placed last fall on the Library lawn will take place this coming Saturday night, February 12. The ceremony, which will be brief, will begin at 8:45 and close promptly at 9 o'clock. The tentative order of procedure will be as follows:
Chorus Singing -America.
Invocation-Rev. K. E. Arnold
Salute to the Flag-Under auspices of the American Legion.
Remarks- Supervisor John R. VanLiew.
Brief Address- Mayor Marion C. Slaght.
Chorus Singing- The Star-Spangled Banner.
If the Towns of Covert and Lodi have met their quota in the Fourth War Loan drive by 9 P. M., the ceremony will be followed by the ringing of the local church bells and sounding of the siren. If more time is needed the bells will ring and siren will sound later in the evening. Let’s get behind our boys with the Fourth War Loan drive. In what better fashion can we celebrate Lincoln's Birthday? [Interlaken Review Feb 11, 1944, item in the Blauvelt WWII scrapbook, Interlaken Historical Society Collections]

As part of the follow-up report, it was noted that the roll had 140 names. Also, the goal for the Fourth War Loan drive had been achieved.

In 1944 Miss Elizabeth Egan sent a Christmas Card to her brothers, each card had several pictures from around Interlaken. One of those photos was a close up of the Honor Roll.

Years later the honor roll was removed from the Library lawn.

Through the efforts of a number of people, a new honor roll was placed in front of the Town of Covert Town Hall a few years ago.

DBN note: with their son serving overseas, I would suspect that Dewitt and Edna attended the dedication, but without his noting it we can’t be sure.
